Tattoo-Friendly Onsen in Wakkanai: Minato no Yu Guide
Wakkanai is the northernmost city in Japan. Even among Japanese travelers, it is often seen as the edge of the country, a place many dream of visiting at least once. Surprisingly, however, the city also attracts a steady number of international visitors. When I visited, I noticed quite a few travelers from Taiwan, and I still remember briefly chatting with them while taking photos for each other at Cape Soya.
The presence of international travelers carries a certain meaning. It reflects the diversity of cultures and backgrounds drawn to this remote city, and naturally, that includes travelers with tattoos. So after arriving in Wakkanai, the very first question that came to my mind was this:
“Is there a sento in this northernmost city that allows tattoos?”
Fortunately, the answer is yes. Located not far from Wakkanai Station and Wakkanai Port, Minato no Yu Onsen (みなとの湯温泉) is one of the rare day-use public baths in Wakkanai where guests with tattoos are welcome. From a traveler’s perspective, the fact that it is tattoo friendly alone makes it well worth a visit.
How to Get to Minato no Yu Onsen
Minato no Yu Onsen is located about 1.1 km south of JR Wakkanai Station, roughly a 15-minute walk. Along the way, you can catch glimpses of the Sea of Japan to the west, and as you stroll with the sea breeze brushing past you, the destination arrives sooner than expected. The crisp air and scenery unique to Japan’s northernmost city make even this short walk feel like part of the journey.
If you start from Minami-Wakkanai Station, it takes about 20 minutes on foot heading north. No matter which station you depart from, the building is fairly large and easy to spot, so getting lost is unlikely. For a sento where you can relax without worrying about tattoos, this short walk feels like a small and reasonable trade-off.
About the Onsen
To use the onsen, you will need to head up to the second floor of the building. As soon as you enter, a wide open view toward the port greets you. Despite being located in the heart of the city, its close connection to the sea gives the space a distinctive charm.
Minato no Yu Onsen is known for using natural hot spring water. The water is classified as chloride and bicarbonate spring water, known for being gentle on the skin with a smooth, soothing texture. As you soak, warmth slowly spreads through your body, easing the fatigue accumulated over days of travel.
Inside, there are several baths set at different temperatures along with an open air bath where you can feel the sea breeze directly. Sitting in the outdoor bath while gazing at the wide horizon creates a quiet sense of freedom, one where you do not feel the need to think about anything at all. The facility also includes a sauna and a cold bath, offering a well-balanced setup for different bathing preferences.
Many visitor reviews mention how especially soft the water feels, helping to release not only physical tension but mental stress as well. After bathing, you can also make use of reclining chairs and simple relaxation areas, making it easy to rest without rushing off to your next destination.
Most importantly, Minato no Yu Onsen is known to be tattoo friendly. According to Google Maps reviews and the facility’s official Twitter account, guests with tattoos are allowed to bathe. Unlike the strict atmosphere often associated with Japanese onsen, tattooed visitors are able to use the facilities here with relative ease. This is one of the main reasons the onsen is popular among tattooed travelers. There is also a restaurant inside the facility, making it a pleasant option to enjoy a light meal after your bath.
