Today, it is considered a must visit spot during any trip to Fukuoka. As you arrive at Beppu Station and look toward the mountains, the rising steam from the vents creates a peaceful first impression that immediately puts your mind at ease. While there are countless baths to choose from, travelers with tattoos often find their options limited unless they book a private ryokan. Although the city is generally welcoming to international guests, finding public baths that allow ink can still require a fair amount of effort. Today, I want to help you save that time. The place I am introducing is Takegawara Onsen, a spot where you can enjoy a soak without worrying about your tattoos. While there may not be explicit signage, the fact that it is directly operated by Beppu City and the abundance of positive Google reviews confirm that it is a tattoo friendly establishment.

Getting There and Introduction

Takegawara Onsen is conveniently located just a ten minute walk from JR Beppu Station. Its proximity to the station is a major plus. As you stroll through the alleys of Beppu, you will suddenly encounter a building that looks as if time has stood still. This is Takegawara Onsen. Built in 1938, the structure is nearly a century old. Because it predates modern architectural styles, its curved roofline, wooden framework, and grand entrance preserve the atmosphere of an old Japanese public bathhouse rarely seen today. The design shares a striking resemblance to the famous Dogo Onsen. The high ceilings in the lobby are particularly impressive. According to the official website, this design was intended to maintain the classic image of the Showa era while providing a spacious area for guests to relax after their bath. The facility is open from 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM, offering plenty of time for a visit. It operates year round without holidays, so you can stop by whenever it suits your schedule. Just keep in mind that the final reception for entry is at 9:30 PM. Admission is incredibly affordable at only 300 yen for adults, making it a perfect way to heal the fatigue of travel.

 

Unique Experiences: The Sand Bath

In addition to the traditional baths, Takegawara Onsen is famous for its unique "Sunayu" or sand bath. In this session, you wear a special yukata and are buried in naturally heated sand, allowing the warmth to deep clean your pores and heat your body to the core. However, because space is limited, you often need to book a specific time slot upon arrival and expect a bit of a wait. I highly recommend checking the availability as soon as you arrive. The sand bath costs 1,500 yen, and interestingly, this fee includes access to the regular hot spring afterward. Experiencing this sand bath is definitely on my own bucket list for my next visit to Beppu.
