Can You Enter Taieiyu with Tattoos? Limited Visitor Reports Reviewed

Today, I’d like to introduce a sento called Taieiyu(大栄湯), located in Hiroshima. This bathhouse boasts excellent accessibility via the JR West Sanyo Main Line. It’s situated in Onomichi City, a place that feels far less crowded than central Hiroshima. Onomichi is a historic port city in southeastern Hiroshima Prefecture, beloved by travelers for its nostalgic atmosphere and stunning ocean views. It’s so romantic and picturesque that it has frequently been used as a backdrop for various Japanese animations. If you love the combination of mountains, sea, and winding slopes, Onomichi is a must-visit. Let’s dive into what Taieiyu has to offer.

Getting to Taieiyu

Getting to Taieiyu from Hiroshima Station is quite straightforward. You have two main options:

  1. The Fast Route: Take the Shinkansen and transfer midway. This takes about 1 hour but costs around 5,000 yen.

  2. The Scenic Route: Take the JR Sanyo Main Line directly to Onomichi Station. This takes about 2 hours but only costs around 1,500 yen.

It’s a classic choice between saving time or saving money. Since you're traveling to soak in the relaxed Japanese atmosphere, why not spend those two hours enjoying a beautiful train journey? You can even try a famous Japanese Ekiben (train station bento) along the way. Once you arrive at Onomichi Station, the bathhouse is just an 8-minute walk away. It’s conveniently located right across from Aeon Mall, a major Japanese supermarket, making it very easy to find.

About Taieiyu: The Tattoo Situation

I wanted to be extra careful with this review. While I often cover tattoo-friendly hot springs and sentos, I couldn't be 100% certain about Taieiyu's official policy. However, after extensive research, I found some promising leads.

According to a few Google reviews, some visitors have reported that entry is possible even with tattoos. The staff is also noted to be friendly toward international visitors. However, because the number of such reports is limited, I wouldn't recommend planning your entire day solely around this visit if you have large, visible tattoos. If you do visit, please let me know your experience so I can update this post for others!

Despite the uncertainty, Taieiyu is well worth a visit for its authentic local vibe. Located near a primary school, residential area, and the Aeon Mall, it is deeply embedded in the daily lives of the residents. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see how locals live and bathe. Furthermore, this sento is a living piece of history. It has been in business for 65 years, which means it has been around as long as a grandparent. For some local families, it’s likely a place where three generations of family members have shared memories.

Interior and Facilities

The building is a white, two-story structure with a vertical sign and the classic "Hot Spring (♨)" symbol, so you can’t miss it. Inside, you’ll immediately feel the passage of time. The lobby features a central bench for resting and vintage wooden lockers. The history is so palpable you can almost smell the faint scent of aged wood.

The bath itself is a modest oval shape. It is not large, but it is perfectly adequate for warming your body and working up a sweat. This simplicity is exactly what makes local sentos so charming. Don't expect grand, modern facilities. The value here lies in the atmosphere and the potential for tattoo acceptance.

After your bath, you can rehydrate with a bottle of coffee milk or a refreshing soda while sitting on that vintage bench. It is pure bliss. I’d love to take a day out of my next Hiroshima trip just to experience this.

  • Note: Towel rentals, hairdryers, and toiletries are available for a small fee.

  • Pro Tip: The operating hours are quite short, only 5 hours a day, so be sure to check the time before you head out!

Taieiyu Summary

  • Business Hours: 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Closed on Saturdays)

  • Admission: 450 yen

  • Parking: 4 free parking spots available

Closing Thoughts

Taieiyu is a historic sento on the outskirts of Hiroshima that focuses on the core purpose of a bathhouse: a good, honest soak. While I can’t guarantee tattoo entry with 100% certainty, there is a strong possibility based on recent reports. Even without tattoos, it’s a fantastic place to experience the "Showa Era" nostalgia of Japan. If you find yourself in Onomichi, why not take a moment to wash away the fatigue of your travels?
