Tattoo-Friendly Hot Spring in Shizuoka – Showa-yu
When traveling in Japan, many people hesitate to visit hot springs because of their tattoos. Most onsen and public baths have restrictions on tattoos, which can make it difficult for some travelers to enjoy this traditional experience. That’s why tattoo-friendly hot springs are such a welcome discovery for travelers like me. Located in Shimoda, Shizuoka Prefecture, Showa-yu is a place I would especially recommend for anyone in that situation. It’s not a large or luxurious facility, but its simple and modest atmosphere allows you to experience a more authentic and local side of Japan.
The most distinctive feature of this hot spring is its alkaline water with a pH of 8.1.
As soon as you step into the bath, you can feel the smooth, silky texture of the water against your skin, a typical characteristic of alkaline hot springs. It almost feels as if you’ve applied lotion, leaving your skin soft and refreshed. Even a short soak is enough to make your body feel lighter and more relaxed.
There is, however, one thing to keep in mind. The water is quite hot, and the bath itself is fairly deep, so it’s best to ease in slowly at first. If you enjoy high-temperature hot springs, you’ll probably love it, but those who are sensitive to heat may find it a bit intense.
Overall, Showa-yu feels like a traditional neighborhood bathhouse. If you’re expecting a modern resort-style onsen, you might be disappointed, but that simplicity is exactly what makes the place charming. The facilities are very basic. There are no showerheads, and no amenities such as shampoo or body wash are provided, so you’ll need to bring your own. Disposable toiletries can be purchased on-site, but it’s much more convenient to prepare in advance. If you’re planning to visit during your trip, bringing a small personal toiletry set is highly recommended.
Although the bathhouse itself is modest, the location is surprisingly convenient. It is about a 13-minute walk from Izukyū-Shimoda Station, and there is also a parking lot available for those traveling by car. Nearby, you’ll find small monuments, an aquarium, and a ferry terminal, making it easy to combine a visit to the hot spring with some light sightseeing. It’s a perfect stop to include in a relaxed day exploring the Shimoda area. Since it is mostly frequented by locals rather than tourists, it’s also a great place to experience everyday Japanese bath culture in a very genuine way.
One of the best things about Showa-yu is the price. The entrance fee is just 490 yen, which is extremely reasonable considering current onsen and public bath prices in Japan. It’s an affordable and easy option for travelers who want to take a break and unwind without spending much.

Showa-yu is certainly not a big or sophisticated hot spring facility. But in its own quiet and humble way, it offers a warm and welcoming experience. If you’d like to relax after a day of travel and enjoy the feeling of stepping into the everyday life of Japan, this little neighborhood onsen is well worth a visit.
